Professor Shafi Ahmed

Multi-award winning surgeon, teacher, futurist, innovator and entrepreneur

Professor Shafi Ahmed is a multi-award winning surgeon, teacher, futurist, innovator and entrepreneur.

His passion is merging the world of medicine, global education, and virtual and augmented reality to democratise and scale surgical education.

Referred to as the “the most watched surgeon in human history”, Professor Shafi has received a number of industry accolades, including the Future NHS Award, presented by Members of Parliament in 2018, and the Webit International Award for Best use of digital innovation in health.

His PhD thesis focused on was on colorectal cancer genetics; in addition, he has been awarded 4 honorary PhDs for his work on global health and education.

Adedicated trainer, educator, and Associate Dean of Bart’s Medical School, he was awarded the Silver Scalpel award in 2015, for best national trainer in surgery by the Association of Surgeons in Training.

In 2016 he performed the world’s first virtual reality operation which was watched by 55,000 people in 140 countries, and reached 4.6 million on Twitter.

In 2016 he used the Snapchat spectacles to teach surgery across the globe; this was viewed by over 2 million people and reached 54 million people on twitter.

In 2017 he conducted an operation alongside other surgeons from three continents and three time zones using avatars and holograms. He co- founded Medical Realties, and the organisation and just released the first VR Interactive Surgical Training Module.

He is a non-executive director of Medic Bleep, a communications platform for healthcare professionals. He is an advisor for governments and multinationals working in the field of Pharma, Digital Health, Artificial intelligence, Robotics and Blockchain

Sofiat Akinola is a global health and policy practitioner with extensive experience in strategy implementation. She has experience using evidence to inform policy through systematic research, data analysis, monitoring and evaluation.

Sofiat is a Specialist, Global Health and Healthcare at the World Economic Forum working on health systems transformation with a focus on Universal Health Coverage where she leads project on UHC2030 Private-Sector Constituency (UHC2030 PSC). UHC2030 PSC is the convening platform for private sector entities wishing to exchange and collaborate on universal health coverage.
Prior to joining the World Economic Forum, Sofiat worked at the Government of Alberta, Canada, where she worked on supporting the implementation of two provincial priorities: FASD 10-Year Strategic Plan and 10-Year Plan to End Homelessness in Alberta. She also worked at the International Centre for Migration, Health and Development in Geneva where her worked focus on strengthening health systems for gestational diabetes diagnosis.

Sofiat has two master’s degree: Master of Public Health from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine and Master of Evidence-Based Social Intervention and Policy Evaluation from the University of Oxford and a bachelor’s degree in Sociology (Gender, Health and International development) from McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

Natalie Black

HM Trade Commissioner, Asia Pacific, Department for International Trade UK

Natalie Black is Her Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Asia Pacific, covering North East Asia, South East Asia and Australasia.

Previously, Natalie was the Deputy Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit where she championed the UK’s tech sector and developed the new modern industrial strategy. In addition to this role, Natalie held the post of Director of the Internet Harms Unit where she coordinated efforts to tackle the challenges of the internet including terrorist use and online safety. Her first role in the Civil Service was Deputy Director and then Director of the Office of Cyber Security in the Cabinet Office where she oversaw the National Cyber Security Strategy and the National Cyber Security Programme.

Before joining the Civil Service, Natalie was the Chief of Staff for Security at the London Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, London2012, and a management consultant.

Natalie is a graduate of the London School of Economics and Harvard Kennedy School, where she was a Fulbright scholar.

Mr Chng was appointed Managing Director of the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB) on 1 October 2017.
He was the Principal Private Secretary (PPS) to the Prime Minister (PM) from 1 September 2014 to 30 September 2017.

Before his appointment as PPS to the PM, Mr Chng served various roles in the Public Service. He was Director of Communications Group at the Prime Minister’s Office, where he oversaw strategic communications and coordinated communications strategy across Government agencies. He was also Director of Resource Industry at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, where he coordinated the Government’s efforts to drive productivity growth, and Director of the Institute of Public Sector Leadership, which runs leadership development programmes for public sector leaders. Mr Chng also served in the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Communications and Information. Mr Chng was also seconded from 2008 to 2010 as a Senior Management Consultant to Shell in its Downstream Strategy Division.
Mr Chng graduated from the University of Cambridge with a Master in Engineering in 2001, specialising in signal processing. In 2011, Mr Chng was awarded the Lee Kuan Yew Scholarship. He is also a Sloan Fellow with a Master of Science in Management from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.

Mr Chng is married with two daughters and a son. In his younger days, he freelanced as a Euphonium player and an amateur conductor. These days, he waves his hands when classical music is playing on the radio, to the bewilderment of his children.

Joseph M. Hogan joined Align in June 2015 as President, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and a Director of Align Technology. Mr. Hogan is an accomplished chief executive with extensive experience across multiple industries including healthcare, technology and industrial automation.

Before joining Align, Mr. Hogan served as CEO of ABB, a $40 billion global power and automation technologies company based in Zurich, Switzerland. During his five years at ABB, Mr. Hogan oversaw a 25% increase in revenues. Prior to ABB, Mr. Hogan spent 25 years at General Electric (GE) in a variety of executive and management roles, including eight years as CEO of GE Healthcare, where he drove significant geographic and market portfolio expansion and more than doubled revenues from $7 billion to $16 billion. Mr. Hogan earned an M.B.A. from Robert Morris University and a B.S. degree in Business and Economics from Geneva College, both in Pennsylvania.

Steve Morley is currently General Manager and Vice President for Fitbit in Asia Pacific. Steve is responsible for driving all aspects of operations from marketing, to retail and to build a strong distribution network in 14 countries across Asia.

Steve has more than 20 years’ experience with a proven track record of international success in Sales and Marketing leadership roles in FMCG, consumer electronics, consumer durables and telecommunications across Europe, Asia and Australia with some of the world’s leading brands including Kodak, Vodafone and Goodyear. He led sales for Kodak’s Digital Division in both Europe and APAC for 10 years during the digital transformation of the industry.

Steve has a passion for customer service that comes from his extensive experience as both a supplier and retailer. His deep experience in consumer technology, online and digital and the many roles, where he has led rapid and massive business transformation means he is well placed to drive Fitbit’s success across the dynamic and fast-growing markets of Asia. He has a passion for soccer and walks the Fitbit talk, tracking at least 15k steps on an average day.

Dr. Anushka Patchava

Expert Advisor United Nations (CEFACT), Healthcare

Dr Anushka Patchava is an experienced strategist having supported the commercialisation of several pharmaceutical assets and the implementation of digital strategies in the Healthcare and Lifesciences sector. Prior to this, Anushka received her Medical Degree from University of Cambridge, and has practiced in both the UK (NHS) and US (Harvard) health systems. She has a particular interest in architecting data-driven environments and is passionate about creating a Connected Care ecosystem; harnessing IoT, 5G, Blockchain and Digital Therapeutic to drive data-fluidity and improve patient outcomes.

She has advised a variety of health related seed and early stage start-ups, drawing upon her unique experience to bridge the interface between physician, patient, payer and policy. She has worked across cross-functional and cross-sector teams, driving conscious collaboration and agile methodologies to disrupt legacy systems and behaviour with deliberate digital design.

She holds qualifications in a breadth of areas including Digital Strategy and Leadership, Value Based Healthcare (Harvard Business School), Innovation (Stanford Business School), Digital Marketing and Analytics (Google Squared) and most recently, Intermediate Python.

Her role as an healthcare expert advisor to the United Nations (CEFACT) is focused on Artificial Intelligence and Blockchain, and her ideas and experience will be shared in an upcoming book chapter on the role of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare.
